Padel madness in the Eternal City

The Italy Major Premier Padel will be remembered as a very special chapter in the history of the sport. The second round of the new FIP circuit came to a city as special as Rome. Throughout the week, the sport of padel set up its 20×10 in an unbeatable setting such as the Foro Italico, the usual venue for the Rome Tennis Máster 1000 , which a few weeks earlier had been held with victory for Novak Djokovic.

The Italian public lived a very intense week of padel that went from less to more as the weekend and the finals approached. Authentic matches between the best players of the circuit that had its final climax with the best match that can be seen right now in the world of padel, couple 1 against couple 2, or what is the same Juan Lebron and Alejandro Galan against Martin Di Nenno and Paquito Navarro.

Both couples put on an unbeatable show for the Roman public with a match in which they didn’t give a single ball away and which started off dominated by the Spanish-Argentine pairing, who took a very even first set by breaking their opponents’ serve in the tenth game to take a 6-4 lead. The crowd was enjoying it and the pressure could be felt on the court.

The second set was very similar. Maximum equality, consolidating their serves in each turn and with the Italian fans very involved in the match.

Paquito enchanted the Italian public

During the course of the match, every step on the benches was a party. Songs, dances, animation, this together with the great match that the four players were playing generated an atmosphere like never seen before in an event of this sport. One protagonist turned out to be the crowd’s favourite during the match. The charisma of the Paquito-Di Nenno pairing, but especially the energy of the player from Seville, made them the crowd’s favourite. So much so that during a break in the match and with a super famous song that the DJ played during the break, the Italian fans covered it, adding Paquito’s name. The song, “Freedom from desire”, sounded like this in the voices of the spectators at the Foro Italico. “Paquito is on fire…”.

Victory for Galan and Lebron in a padel party

Finally the number 1 pairing took advantage of the positive momentum after levelling the match and started the third set much better. They got a break at the beginning of the set that would be definitive to complete the comeback with a 6-3 win and take home the second major of the season, after the Qatar tournament that their rivals had won.

Once the match was over and the trophies were handed out, with the formal speeches, there was a scene on the padel court that is very difficult to see in other sports. The speaker of the tournament approached Paquito Navarro and asked him if he could play the song that resounded throughout the match. Even though he had lost and with his particular charisma and joy, the Andalusian player joined the party and with mobile phone in hand began to sing the song with the public. Alongside him on the court, his teammate, rivals and authorities also cheered up to the rhythm of the song.
